TARGETED REMOVAL

Microphlebectomy: The "Mini" Phlebectomy

Microphlebectomy (also known as Ambulatory Phlebectomy) is a minimally invasive technique used to physically remove bulging varicose veins that sit just beneath the skin’s surface. Unlike vein stripping of the past, this modern procedure uses microscopic incisions—so small they require no stitches—to gently extract the damaged vein. This offers immediate relief from discomfort and instantly restores the smooth appearance of your leg.

Because the incisions are needle-sized, recovery is exceptionally fast. Most patients return to light daily activities immediately after leaving our Sugar Land clinic. Since this is a medical treatment for symptomatic veins, it is typically covered by most insurance plans.

Immediate Results: Varicose veins are physically removed, offering instant visible improvement.

RECOVERY & CARE

Is Microphlebectomy Right for You?

This procedure is the gold standard for patients who have large, palpable varicose veins that are too wide to be treated effectively with sclerotherapy or laser alone. It is often performed in conjunction with other treatments to ensure comprehensive results. Before recommending microphlebectomy, Dr. Reincke will perform a detailed ultrasound mapping of your venous system. This ensures that we are not just removing the visible surface vein, but also addressing the underlying root cause of the reflux, providing you with durable, long-term relief and a safe, smooth recovery process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about recovery, scarring, and the microphlebectomy procedure.

Because the incisions made during a microphlebectomy are tiny (often the size of a needle tip), scarring is minimal to non-existent. We do not use sutures; instead, the small punctures are closed with sterile tape. Over time, these marks fade significantly and are usually difficult to see, leaving you with a smooth, cosmetically pleasing result.

There is essentially no downtime for this procedure. You can return to light work and walking immediately. However, we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or running for about 1–2 weeks to allow the treated area to heal properly. Walking is highly encouraged to promote healthy blood flow.

While you can shower 24 hours after the procedure, you must avoid soaking the treated leg in bathtubs, hot tubs, or swimming pools for at least 7–10 days. This precaution is vital to prevent bacteria from entering the tiny incision sites while they heal. You may also need to wear compression stockings for a week to minimize bruising or swelling.

Yes, very different. Traditional vein stripping was a major surgery requiring general anesthesia and hospital stays. Microphlebectomy is a modern, ambulatory procedure performed right here in our office under local anesthesia. It is far less invasive, much safer, and involves significantly less pain and recovery time.
